Action Research Topic and Plan


I will identify economically disadvantaged sophomore students and compare the academic performance of those involved in extracurricular activities versus the nonparticipating economically disadvantaged students.  I will obtain this data from academic transcripts, attendance and discipline reports from the administration, and collaborate with coaches and sponsors of the activities.  It is my belief that students involved in one or more of the 17 sports, 7 fine arts programs or the 40+ clubs and organizations instill a sense of pride and belonging. Thus producing fewer attendance and discipline issues which in turn foster greater academic performance.


Action Research Plan
GOAL:  Prove that economically disadvantaged sophomore students who participate in extracurricular activities have greater academic success than the nonparticipating economically disadvantaged students.  Thus, providing the data to prove that Trinity High School needs to be proactive in getting students involved in the school community to improve academic performance and accountability ratings.

  1. The detail of your plan is outstanding. It seems, to me, that you've thought through your inquiry with outstanding precision. I also like how your action research leads itself to further action research - e.g. if you can prove that extra-curricular activities are beneficial then you can research ways to get students involved. Good luck!

  2. My thought when I read your plan is that it is only research with no action. You are not taking an action to make change, but just looking at data to see if change is needed. It seems to me that the action research plan would include the attempt at involving more students.

    I do think your plan to prove that action is needed is a good one.

    1. Thank you for your honest opinion. It really provoked some intense thinking on my part. I am going to review my plan because in my head I had full intentions of finding ways to promote student involvement.

  3. Hey Patti -

    Excellent topic! It looks like all the steps are well setup and ready to go. One suggestion I can make would be to look at specific clubs. For example, do kids in athletics score better or worse than kids in debate? Are the kids in the environmental club have more or less tardies than those in the community service organization? It might be interesting to find out which clubs should have more of a push or support from the school.

    1. Thank you for your suggestions. I am having a difficult time trying to decide where I want to go with this because there are so many options.

      Yes, I am at Euless Trinity HS. Can you tell me your sisters name and is she involved in any sports or activities?

  4. What a great research project, but I do agree somewhat with Cubby. In your plan you don't explain what you will be doing that is the action. Although I know you will and can imagine what it will be, it is not explicitely stated.

    I want to see if I understand correctly. Your sample group is going to be socio-economically disadvantaged students who have behavior referrals, truancy issues, and/or poor performance academically. Is this correct? Will you be comparing them at all to those who are in the same category and performing successfully at school?

Yes, I will examine all sophomore economically disadvantaged students who participate in activities versus the non participating sophomore economically disadvantaged students. I did not realize I did not state any "action". I have a feeling this is going to take me on a wild ride--feel like I way and then it take me a whole different way!

  5. Your action research is inspiring. I believe that this will evolve to additional levels which will impact students in a very positive way. It will be work in progress which can only get better.

    1. I'm a little bias to the inquiry. My son is a sophomore student who plays sports and the majority of his teammates are doing okay. The practice time is not that long that would prevent the studendts from excelling. The only factor is the student and what they want to achieve. The coaches make it mandatory that the kids recieve grades higher than a C to play. I believe that whatever is instilled in the child by their parents, then that's what will happen. Strong leadership, good grades and determiniation. Sophomore year is somewhat laid back...

  7. I think that this is a valid inquiry. I see students that don't belong to any kind of school activities and they seem to fall into easy groups that have no requirements to be a part of. That is usually the troubled groups or the ones that participate in a lot of drugs. This often leads them down a road that they can not recover from.

    As I look at your Goal and description how will you measure the pride and sense of belonging in your research? I also think that there could be sport specific as Eric stated. Do economically disadvantaged students not participate in extracurricular activities? What is the percentage of students of economically disadvantaged students. Demographics of whole campus. The plan is well laid out and has a good structure.

    1. You have a good question, Stevan. Just one problem. Extra curricular activities can include Fine Arts clubs, community involvement clubs, etc. Also, there are normally way more students than spots on a team. If Patti's research is to encourage students to participate in some kind of activity, she will need a plan in place to guide the extra students into different activities. I believe she mentioned that there were 40+ clubs. That's a fantastic amount and hopefully those not chosen for sports will be able to find a sense of belonging and fulfillment in one of those. I'm excited for Patti and this project.
